Rethinking Constant’s ancient liberty: Bosanquet’s modern Rousseauianism

Benjamin Constant was a vociferous critic of the political Rousseauianism that he saw underpinning French politics in early nineteenth-century. Yet, his hostile reaction at level co-existed with far more sympathetic attitude towards Rousseau’s critical analysis modernity. This article reflects on combination through dual lens influence Constant’s position ambivalent Rousseau one hand and modernisation undertaken eighty years later by British idealist Bernard Bosanquet (1848–1923) other. Reading criticisms mind uncovers underappreciated dimensions both Bosanquet’s thought, suggests ways to overcome distinction between ancient modern liberty is often simplistically attributed Constant.
